The Origin of Halloween
(Courtesy of http://www.holidayinsights.com/)

Halloween's roots can be traced back to Celtic culture in Ireland. According to their "Druid" religion, November 1st was New Years' on their calendar. The celebration would begin on October 31st ,and last into the following day. The spirits of all who died in the prior year, would rise up and roam the earth on this night.

This is an evil night when spirits roamed the streets and villages. Lord Samhain, the lord of Darkness, would arrive in search of the spirits to take them to the underworld.

Scary...

In the United States consumers spend up to 2.5 Billion dollars on Halloween. The only other holiday that eats up more money is Christmas...

Scarier...

It's really interesting that over time celebrations can lose their true meaning. I mean, look at what happened to Christmas. They took a religious holiday and commercialized it. It's pretty sad. Same deal with Halloween. I don't think kids would be running around the streets at night if they were told that the spirits of the dead were walking around outside.

Nevertheless, I think Halloween is an awesome holiday, were celebrating the Lord of Darkness for crying out loud!

This is my costume idea

Even scarier...

How is everyone spending their Halloween?
